Remembering our loved ones

12.11.23

Community for Hope’s annual Remembrance Gathering took place on December 7, 2023 at the beautiful Oakhaven Church in Oshkosh. Pastor Larry Mudd and Executive Director, Sarah Danahy hosted those who have lost a loved one to suicide.

As various Board Members and others talked with families and loved ones, the common theme seemed to be the need to say their names, to honor their memory and to remember. One of the highlights of the evening was the annual candle-lighting ceremony, as we welcomed families to come up and light a candle to honor their loved one. This is always a somber, but hopeful moment.

As families were gathering to leave at the end of the program, one particular individual was approached by another family. They offered her a ride home, as they could see she was really struggling throughout the evening. ‘No distance is too far’ they told her- we are here to support one another. This simple gesture of companioning captured the essence of what the Remembrance Gathering is all about. Community for Hope is honored to companion with families every holiday season, and throughout the year.
